Are We Creating Our Replacement?

Dolls will soon be equipped with "social behavior" chips, endowing them with the ability to talk to their owner as well as each other. They will walk on legs made from polymer gels, which will bend in response to laser signals. Eventually, dolls and other toys will come loaded with sophisticated personalities and have the use of the same five senses as humans. With the aid of skin resistance and temperature sensors, the dolls will sense the child's emotional state and respond accordingly. If the child is upset, the doll will offer a hug or speak in a softer tone. When the child is angry, the doll will retreat and create distance until the child calms down. In the days quickly approaching, Barbies will hold their own tea parties and dolls will have at least the same legal protections that animals now have. The troubling question of whether or not these robots will be able to develop an independent consciousness plagues scientists. I guess we'll soon find out.
Check out this robot child created a few years back by child development researchers.

Wait, they made a robot so they could study human development?
